Natural science is essentially dependent upon that type of observation
by which the pure aesthetic experience is stabilized in an attitude from
which fresh discoveries can be made.

The creek is dry again, with no sound, but for footsteps
on rocky hard-packed ground. It's been several months
since I took this path; new beings have been born while
whole species have disappeared.

The last taboo is the myth of civilization. It is built upon the stories we
have constructed about our genius, our indestructibility, our manifest
destiny as a chosen species.
