we called them. They stuck to the bottom of my pants as I pedaled on long hot stretches
of sun-baked pavement, weeds to either side, cows grazing
the Great Dark Spot in the southern
atmosphere of Neptune, first discovered in 1989 by the Voyager 2 spacecraft. It was an incredibly
large rotating storm system with winds of up to 1,500 miles per hour
through a middle-class
neighborhood, rolling into the Rio Grande's Bosque and stopping to dream in the dappled light
of its deep- rooted, water-starved, cottonwood trees.

He had entered a strange world. All day long he searched
for some familiar path. In vain! Trees, rivers, animals, all
were the same as those at home and yet everything was
strange to him.
