What Kind of Thing is This Thing of Kinds?
(First Things First and Last Things)

Charms against chaos.

As with all games, which include the most serious endeavors like science, religion, and setting the table, sorting things out is our attempt to control what we know to be an uncontrollable world. We can't live with amorphous time, so we divide it into weeks, 52 accidental things. Amorphous space, likewise, terrifies us, so we divide it into territories, plots, my yard and yours. Though we recognize the arbitrariness of these acts, they are fundamental to sanity. We know it's a game, but we go on comforting ourselves with frames placed on the landscape of time and space we're born into. Frames we know to be as arbitrary as a deck of cards. And Sorting Things Out deals from this deck. ~ Both/And ~
