Virtual Marshall
Entertainment tonight

Pioneer
Cyberspace pioneers Brenda Laurel and Trip Hawkins invite the formerly flash-frozen Marshall McLuhan to Silicon Valley for a taste of virtual reality. McLuhan puts the trip off for several weeks, agreeing only when Entertainment Tonight picks up his expenses.

McLuhan examines the eyephone rig for sharp edges or pointy things that might be needles, then removes his glasses in surrender. He has to be reminded to open his eyes.

After the demo, McLuhan is uncharacteristically quiet. "I thought he'd had another stroke," Laurel tells a friend. Back at his hotel, McLuhan locks himself into his room for three days.
