Text Menu

The USA TODAY carries its bright color scheme from its paper into the anchors on its website. Each section is color coded, with the same color used for both headers and anchors--a nondifferentiated effect. Compare the hunt for anchor and nonanchor content with brandchannel's [5] use of the same graphic for anchoral and nonanchoral content.

Icons and subject categories

Text anchors are put into categories separated by lines with the same color scheme. This serves to conflate anchors with surrounding text--unlike A List Apart [2], which reserves a single color for anchors to clearly delineate them.

Unlike BBC [4] or Bankrate [3] 's subtle subject schemes, or even EarthTrend's [12] background schemes, these subject areas are brightly delineated.

Note that, like Bankrate [3], USA TODAY uses common icons with text. However, these are primarily used to denote subject categories rather than tools.
