Ways of Seeing
They pulled off at a truck stop about an hour from Memphis. Gina spent most of the break buying snacks and going to the john. When she got back, Bent was in one of his moods. He had that frown that looked like somebody took a cleaver to his forehead.

She asked him what was wrong and got the usual answer, which was nothing. He could go a week or more and only open his mouth to eat and drink. That was Bent.

When they were across the river and out of Memphis, he finally opened up. The car was riding too low in back. People were looking.

She said some things to soothe him and rubbed the back of his neck.
