This is the dream of impossible music. You can have this dream only if you once learned to play some instrument badly. Virtuosi never have this dream, for which reason they experience a certain kind of sexual ecstasy only once.
In the dream of impossible music, you take up your horn, your keyboard, your fiddle, your fretless Fender, whatever. You do this in later life when no one expects it. For instance, at a meeting of the Society for Plane Geology at a certain Chinese Restaurant.
The music that comes out of you is astonishing, transporting, wholly original and brilliantly improvised. In the dream you hear the music, realized in every detail. But each note you play is unique, and when the sound fades it is gone forever.
