This is the dream of falling and flying at the same time, in which you are lying prone in thin air and you are always some distinct distance from the ground, but you are somehow always losing altitude and in danger of touching down.
When you touch the earth you will die. You know this unmistakably. The only way to keep alive is to fly, but you are falling.
Sometimes you gain altitude through an act of will, but concentrating has the opposite effect and brings you horribly, terribly low and close, so that you have to draw your limbs in tight.
