The Wikipedia is an efferent community site, which invites readers to contribute. The editing instructions hint at the free for all editing possible in the encyclopedia:: "If you do not want your writing to be edited mercilessly and redistributed at will, then do not submit it. By submitting your work you promise you wrote it yourself, or copied it from public domain resources — this does not include most web pages."

Contributors can also link to other parts of the Wikipedia or any other website. This encourages densely embedded text links.

Where The Unknown [56] has dense connotative anchors, the anchors here are more denotative. Anchors encourage further exploration of a subject. In the screenshot example, the anchors "chemical element," "periodic table," and "atomic number" all trigger links to articles with the same title that explain these terms.
